Whiskey Classics Week: Blackthorn Cocktail Recipe

In a recent effort to expand our whiskey repertoire, we’ve been trawling the Savoy Cocktail Book for Prohibition era whiskey cocktails. This week, we’re sharing with you a handful of our favorites from this collection of unfamiliar classics.

One thing we noticed in our perusal of the Savoy was that 100 years ago they didn’t seem to have the same aversion to anise that many people do now. Anise is employed frequently, if judiciously, in the Savoy’s recipes. In today’s, just a dash is enough to make a difference.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 oz Irish whiskey
  • 1 1/2 oz dry vermouth–we use Dolin
  • 1 dash anise liqueur
  • 1 dash aromatic bitters

Instructions

  • Stir all with ice (or shake if you believe Craddock, but don’t).
  • Strain into a cocktail glass.
